The American dabasay is informed that on January 8th last,

the Federal Telegraph Company, an American Corporation, signed with

the Chinese Goverment a contract for the construction and opening

of wireless stations at Shanghai, Poxing, Harbin and Canton for

a period of ten years in joint agrement with the Chinese Goverment,

and for a further period of tm years thereafter on a royalty basis.

In this regard the marican Government is mazed to learn

that liis Majesty's Minister at Peking recently advised the American

Legation there that, under instructions from His Britarmio Majesty'

Government, he had protested to the Chinese Covernment against th

American contrnet sbøve referred to, and had insisted upon its

cancellation on the ground that such a contract infringes upon the

rights which are claimed to have saerued to the British Marconi

Company by virtue of a contrast antered into on Kay 24th, 1919,

established a joint enterprise under the name of the British

Cerperation, with certain preferential rights for the supply of

vireless equipment to the Chinese Goverıment.

Leaving on one side for the present any discussion as to the propriety of a foreign deverment asserting diplomatically na against another nationality the claims of this Corporation, American Goverment desires to meet unequivocally and on its merits the olmim that any Government can rightfully assert in behalf of the interests of its nationals to exercise any such monopoly or prefer- enge for the supply of metericis er equipment pe would debar
